Truth Matters!

The following is a note that I received from a client last night. It just made my heart sing!  THIS is why I do this!  THIS is why I continue to advocate for feeding horses and keeping horses like … well, horses!

Welp. I just got disowned by my first mentor who certified me in trimming. Not for changing the way i trim a bit, but because my horses are out on pasture and I’m feeding them a whole foods diet. In her words, “its irresponsible and she cannot condone such misguided advice for horses, let alone cushings/ir type.”
But i wanted to thank you again, because buck is better than he has ever been and he is so much happier. Fabio is doing great, he can run on gravel even though his hooves are not even close to being good. And my new girl is already debloating and I think her eyes are even less swollen today and its only been three days since i brought her home.
Her and two others like her were saved and are happy and galloping around because of you 🙂 i told my friend we could take a chance on this gelding who was dry lotted, fat, super lame, in shoes and worsening rotation. We took him and turned him out to pasture, did some very specific, barely noticeable trimming and in 6 weeks he was galloping around the pasture. Once that barn learned we fixed him another lady asked us to take her two who had the exact same problems. So we now have three registered rocky mountain horses for free who are sound and no longer in pain. These two we just got we had her farrier not touch since the last trim and they came sound a few weeks ago without her trimming, but they still had them locked up in small dry lots with alfalfa and salt blocks. And both have huge cresty necks, bulging eyes and those weird fat deposits in the shoulders and rump. The first one did too but not as bad and he looks amazing now.
Thanks to you, I now know the truth behind truly healthy, happy horses. It was hard for me to let go and feed Buck all these things that logically seem healthy and good, but had been brainwashed into believing they were culprits… how silly!
Anywho, thank you for being you and for standing up for the truth. –Lacelynn, Peoria, IL

🙂 — We are EXCITED to begin this new journey with PENZANCE Equine Integrative Solutions!

The Quiet Corner

PENZANCE Equine Integrative Solutions is now nestled in the “Quiet Corner” of CT.

A move from Douglas, MA to SW Florida did not pan out the way it was expected. Many factors played into the decision to move back to New England from FL but mostly health reasons for the horses and humans alike.

It was a good move.

PENZANCE now has the room to offer clinics and workshops covering WHOLE HEALTH for the WHOLE HORSE. Equine Natural Nutrition, Natural Balanced Hoofcare, Clicker Training, Faith-based Equine Assisted Personal Development as well as general Equine Connections are all part of what is to come in the spring of 2019. Plans are being put into place to host Guest Experts in the Equine Natural Care, as well. Stay Tuned!

In the meantime, while you are waiting for the exciting new events in 2019, Gwenyth Santagate, founder and owner of PENZANCE Equine Integrative Solutions, offers private and semi-private sessions in all of the above mentioned areas. If you would like to talk with Gwenyth or schedule an introductory appointment (or regular appoinment) please feel free to email to her: gwen.santagate@gmail.com or call her (860) 556-9199.

You are invited to also connect with Gwenyth on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/gwenyth.santagate as well as through a number of PENZANCE Equine groups and pages.

Please  — if you have particular workshops or clinics that you would like to see offered here in “The Quiet Corner” of CT, jot them down below in the comments and we’ll see what we can do.

Be blessed.

Do You Give Your Horse a Choice?

“Offering animals choice does not inherently mean that humans have to relinquish theirs – or vice versa.

Rather, it is about really hearing what is being communicated and negotiating from there in a way that honours both voices. ”

I am one who believes in mutual respect and partnership.

I’ve gone the route of “being the *boss*” to “be the leader” in a subservient manner – expecting the horse to comply with my demands regardless of what he or she “feels” to learning  what SERVANT LEADERSHIP is all about …

Being a SERVANT LEADER means serving the team. Serving the other person – teaching, leading by example, not *demanding* but politely suggesting, asking and then not being afraid to change things up if the ‘team’ isn’t understanding what is being asked.

“The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first.” –Robert K. Greenleaf.

No, I’m not saying that horses are people but I AM saying that I want to RESPECT them as sentient beings in the same manner that I ask them for respect.

It’s really quite simple … do unto others …

This article is good so thought I’d share it today:

Enjoy!  and yes, I am looking forward to discussion on it. 🙂

RIGHT or LEFT? Let the HORSE CHOOSE.

“Horses, as with humans, have preferences and it is best to allow your horse to choose their essential oil; they will generally indicate to you what they need if you listen and observe. Offer the essential oil to them to smell. “If the horse has an imbalance in the physical sense, it will probably use its right nostril first. If the problem is more emotionally based, the horse will use its left nostril first. The right nostril is linked to the side of the brain, which governs the horse’s functions. The left nostril is linked to the right side of the brain, which governs the intuitive side. When we are working with horses we want them in their left-brain where they will be thinking not reacting instinctively, which they do if in their right-brain. If the horse is interested it will move the required nostril over the oil and inhale. If it is not interested the horse will move away.” Any essential oils that your horse turns away from put aside for that day. When using aromatherapy with animals or people it is always best to respect and trust the individuals desires and inner wisdom.”

Gwen is a wonderful teacher. When I first got my horse Jigs, he was pushy and didn’t listen. After a few sessions with her, he became a barn favorite for his good manner and sunny personality.
Gwen trained me I think, not JIGS :). I highly reccomend her.

Owner, Horses Know the Way Home
Gwen,
What impresses me about you is, you look not only at the hoof but the whole horse and the whole horse environment. Who is the owner and where does the horse live and how are they treated and fed.
You stay on top of the the latest research and you follow up with pertinent information in a very timely fashion.

“… If it weren’t for you Gwen, my passion for horses would not have grown to what it is today.  I started my online lessons with Gwen in 2008 and have taken many lessons with her. She really knows her stuff. My horse is healthy. My other horse, Corado, died of cancer at 18. He may not have lived as long if it weren’t for Gwen. Both of my horses never colicked, their feet were absolutely amazing (with Gwen’s guidance), never lame.  … After 5 years of following Gwen’s method, I have proof that she knows her stuff (and if she doesn’t she’ll find the information).  Love you Gwen. RONN, New York :
Hi Gwen,
I first came to you because of my need to get ‘ real “ answers  about natural hoof care.  Your original Penzance website led me to enroll in your class Natural Hoof Care 101. I knew absolutely nothing at that time and had a horse that had recently foundered.
After working with you I working with you, I came away with the confidence that I had made the right decision to keep my horse as natural as possible, regardless of domestication.
I feel that overall your reasoning has been solid throughout the years and that is why I still call upon you as one of my two ” go to ” mentors regarding anything hoof. The other is K C LaPierre.  Beyond the hoof, especially respecting nutrition, Gwen– u da girl !

“I would entrust the care and well-being of any horse, sound or lame, healthy or sick, troubled or at peace, to Gwen Santagate. I give her my highest recommendation because she is one of the most honest, wisest,  and most circumspect people I have ever met. She goes the extra mile (or ten) for the horse’s sake and makes every animal’s total well-being her top priority. My horse recommends her, too -four hooves up! –  because, thanks to her, and her alone, he is alive and well.”

Mutual or Fearful Respect?

Image27

Mutual respect or fearful respect? Which is it for you; for your horse?

When teaching children we try to have patience and be clear in our instructions. We keep our voices soft, our eyes, soft and our hearts compassionate.

When teaching horses we see alot of bats, whips, flags, chasing round and round, angry faces, incongruent body languages … all in the name of ‘natural horsemanship’.

Let me tell you what happens when you’re trying to ‘train’ a horse using forceful equipment and language … (meaning mind body and heart language)

Horses are meant to remember every single flight or fight moment … that is, whatever cause them to feel as if they need to flee, jump away, startle away – they remember.

Always.

That’s just simply the way their survival system is formed.

We humans are much the same.

PTSD = Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

This occurs from those momentary flight or fight events.

Every flight or fight event for the horse is woven into the tapestry of the brain … forever.

This response actually triggers a chain response in the brain and body.

It’s a ‘whole body’ response.

Never forgotten.

When a horse apparently ‘succumbs’ to a scary thing and ‘submits’ to the human causing the scary thing, the horse embeds a PTSD moment into his brain .. forever. And now, forever, he’ll try to avoid that PTSD moment, in some manner, out of fear.

Because the horse submits some say now the horse is ‘respectful’ or some say now the horse is ‘desensitized’.

But somewhere, sometime, somehow down the line, the horse will have a PTSD recurrance moment that is unconsciously connected directly to the initial ‘training’ moments that cause the PTSD in the first place.

This is not ‘respect’ when a horse responds to a harsh cue with, what seemingly appears to be, a ‘correct response’.

This is fear based reaction.
This becomes a classically conditioned response of fear.

A horse moves out of the human’s way as a response to being swatted on the face or neck with a hard, rubber bat. A horse swings its butt around to face the human to avoid being kicked in the hindquarters or whipped. The horse moves sideways to avoid the sting of a crop on its side. The horse goes into the trailer to avoid the ‘punishment’ of not going into the trailer.

The list goes on.

The horse is ‘obeying commands’ but not out of respect.

He’s “obeying” out of fear. He is AVOIDING pain, discomfort, fear.

PTSD is a funny thing .. for humans and for horses. It can rear its ugly head with a totally uncontrollable response and do so ‘out of nowhere’.

Not something anyone wants when riding or working around horses.

Horses that TRULY respect the human will try like crazy to avoid stepping on the human, running the human over … and will try like crazy to please the human; to get the ‘right’ answer. The horse will be bright and alert and happily engaged with the human as he is with a friend of his own kind. He will try to figure out what is being asked and willingly stay with the human to find out the answer.

Just like humans, horses want to feel ‘good’. They will repeat behaviors and try to recreate situations that made them feel good in the past.

Positive reinforcement goes a long, long way in teaching children AND horses …

Being *rewarded* for a “correct” response vs. being “punished” for the “wrong” response.

Is that how we teach our children?

Is that how you teach your horse?

If you’d like to learn more about positive reinforcement and how to create and develop a life-long lasting PARTNERSHIP with your horse, simply ask me.

I will help you. I will help your horse and together, as a team, we’ll make it happen.
