July 19: Attend a Public Hearing in the Great Hall of the State House and then Speak With Your Legislator

Sponsored by: Small Holders Alliance

With the Help of State Representative Robert Rice, Small Holders Alliance (SHA) has organized a Public Hearing in the Great Hall of the Massachusetts Statehouse in Boston about the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) in Massachusetts. For more information see:
http://www.smallholdersalliance.com

The hearing will start at 10:30a.m. Among those giving testimony will be Jack Kittredge, Social Action Coordinator for NOFA/Mass who will speak on why NAIS will fail to protect public health, how it will hurt small farmers, and why supporting small and sustainable agriculture is the best way of protecting food security and public health. People wanting to testify should submit a hand carried letter and contact Pat below.

Following the testimony, participants will have the chance to lobby their legislators about how NAIS would effect them personally.

The event will take place in the Great Hall at the State House in Boston.

If you are coming to the event, please contact Pat Stewart (below) so that organizers can get an idea of the response for this event.

New England Nigerian Dwarf Association (NENDA) has agreed to act as a non-profit partner in this hearing.

August 1: Informational Meeting on the National Animal Identification System and its Effects on Small Farmers

Sponsored by:
The committee to establish an Agricultural Commission in Ludlow, and the Northeast Organic Farming Association, Massachusetts Chapter

When: Tuesday, August 1, 7:00pm

Where: First Meeting House (formerly known as the Ludlow Grange)
At the intersection of Church Street and Center Street (859 Center St.)

Who: The committee to establish an Agricultural Commission in Ludlow, and the Northeast Organic Farming Association, Massachusetts Chapter, are sponsoring an informational meeting on The National Animal Identification System for anyone who owns one or more livestock animals and anyone who cares about local and sustainable agriculture.

What: Our guest speaker will be Jack Kittredge of Many Hands Organic Farm, Barre, Mass. Please come and find out how this proposed program will affect your farm, 4H projects, and viability of local agriculture. Meet other farmers and concerned citizens in the area of Ludlow, Belchertown, and Granby.

Why:
NAIS will put unnecessarily burdensome regulations on small farmers, threatening the viability of small and sustainable agriculture and undermining food security. But NAIS has not yet been fully implemented and we have a window of opportunity to act right now to stop it.

August 12: NOFA Summer Conference Debate:
"Mandatory Animal Identification: Should We Support the USDA Plan?"

Sponsored by: Northeast Organic Farming Association, Massachusetts Chapter

When: Saturday, August 12, 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Where: Hampshire College (893 West St, Amherst, MA) in the main auditorium of Franklin Patterson Hall.

What: Every year, NOFA organizes a major Summer Conference that draws around 1400 people from all over the Northeast. We organize a free public debate on a current topic that is relevant to the concerns of our members. This year the topic is: "Mandatory Animal Identification: Should We Support the USDA Plan?" Speaking in support of the plan will be Ken Kelly, the staff attorney for the Food Safety Project of the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Doug Gillespie, the Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, will speak as well, specifically in support of the premises registration program that Massachusetts has already implemented. Opposing NAIS will be Mary Zanoni, attorney and executive director of Farm for Life, and Patty Lovera, assistant director of Food and Water Watch.

We must begin to think in terms of TEACHING our horses rather than "training" them ...
"We do not talk about good education of humans as demanding only obedience and domination but rather one in which the human is given the basic tools (which may require considerable application and motivation, hard work and obedience, too). Once these have been acquired, the human is encouraged to use them to develop his or her art and particular skills. Some end up great artists and dancers; some are mediocre. What makes a great performer, though, is not blind obedience and the domination of one individual by another, but imagination, sensitivity to each partaking individual and willing cooperation. How much greater our respect for all participants then becomes. If we have yet to see this with (horses), it is not that it cannot happen, it is just that it has not yet been thought about and efforts made to try it out. " -- Marthe Kiley-Worthington

A Tribute to a Very Special Friend

"But ask the animals, and they will teach you; the birds of the air, and they will tell you; ask the plants of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you. Who among all these does not know that the hand of the Creator of Life has done this? In God's hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of every human being."  -- Job 12:7-10
"Men try to fix problems with duct tape. God did it with nails."
