The Horses and Ponies of PENZANCE
2009

Each horse and pony who comes to PENZANCE does so with purpose. It is here that they stay, safe from misguided handling and care, for as long as they are meant to be here. For a few ponies it means until their learning is complete in order to go on, in service,  to 'their' families and for the horses, forever they stay. Each horse and pony has its own history and story to tell. Each one has a special gift to give each human who visits and interacts with the herd. Each horse and pony (and, of course, our Sicilian senior donkey) is a unique individual and that uniqueness and individuality is highly respected.

God told us in Job 12:7 - 10 ...

"But now ask the beasts, and let them teach you;
And the birds of the heavens, and let them tell you.
Or speak to the earth, and let it teach you;
And let the fish of the sea declare to you.
Who among all these does not know
That the hand of the LORD has done this,
In whose hand is the life of every living thing,
And the breath of all mankind?"

I am pleased to introduce to you ... The Horses and Ponies of PENZANCE who have so much to share: Updated October 2010

MISTY
R.I.P. 1982-Sept.2010

28+ something Arappaloosa
The Herd Alpha
Misty is a rehabbed "killer".
Misty is now, with Dorian, the wisest and the 'elders' of the herd.

TAMILYN

7 year old PMU Appaloosa/Belgian
Adopted at 5 mos. old - considered by the industry as a "by-product". Those foals that are not adopted from the PMU farms are slaughtered for food.

DORIAN
R.I.P. 1982-Sept.2010

28 year old Off Track Thoroughbred.
Dorian raced over 6 years and is a descendant of Native Dancer and Northern Dancer. He was once labeled "The Psycho Horse" and no one would handle him. His registered name is "Let's Dance".

CHEYENNE

8 year old Mustang mare
Captured in Nevada at 10 1/2 mos. old; put into a 'holding pen' until adopted at 1 1/2 yrs. old. Went through 6 auction houses and 5 owners before we took her in at just barely 4 years old. She is now a bona-fide 'counselor' here at PENZANCE with a giving heart and soul.

DIEGO

14 year old Appaloosa
Diego is the one and only horse that is ridden here on PENZANCE. His former owner fell victim to the failing economy and asked if we would take him. There was never a second thought about it. Diego is the newest member of the PENZANCE family and he and Cheyenne are 'partners'.
CIDER

15 year old UK Shetland
Personal Ponies LTD.
Cider came to PENZANCE over 10 years ago with Crackers. They both were in need of 'training'. They, in turn have loved and taught many children and adult who have come to PENZANCE. Cider is the 'leader' of the pony herd.

CRACKERS

14 year old UK Shetland
Personal Ponies LTD.
Crackers is the one who teaches adults how to 'play'. He's the sweetest boy and has been the reason for much laughter for the last 10 years.

RUSTY

5 year old UK Shetland
Personal Ponies LTD.
Rusty came here a little over a year ago - very misunderstood and very scared of 'grownups'. He now is the first to come to investigate and meet a visitor.

CD

10 year old UK Shetland
Personal Ponies LTD.
CD arrived last summer absolutely just full of himself. Now he's dubbed "The Little Professor" as he teaches communication skills and leadership skills to all, children and adults alike.

Other members of our critter family:

Pikachus

14 year old Rat Terrier
'Adopted' from local zoo.

Sadie Mae

3 1/2 year old SATO
(street dog rescued from
Puerto Rico)
Duke

3 yo German Shepard.
"Special Needs" Dog ... Duke has a cleft palate but is not visible on the outside.

Misty (left) and J.C's Bubba (right)
Founders of PENZANCE
Bubba passed 3 years ago at
32 years old. Bubba taught hundreds of children and adults about horses and riding during his 15 years with us. He was known to be "the Saint". Misty is still
recovering from the loss of her closest companion.
So are we all.

Ginger
7 years ago a mangy looking, foundered 36 yo. horse came walking down our driveway in the middle of the night. Not just once but twice! She ended up staying here at Penzance and was a treasured friend to many until she passed at 40 years old. Ginger found her beauty and grace right here at PENZANCE and gave her heart and soul to many.

"Holly"
1975 - 2007
Holly, aka "Lucy" (from "I Love Lucy") was laid to rest almost 2 years ago on a sunny fall day at 32 years old. She was an integral part of the PENZANCE herd and is sadly missed by all.

Many others have passed through PENZANCE at one time or another and all had something to share for someone. Some have gone on to other homes with their owners while others passed here and now lay at rest forever. We honor them all.

And last but certainly not least ...

PENZANCE would not be complete
without recognizion of "Amahl"
our Sicilian Donkey. He greets
anyone who ventures onto the farm
with a loud, boisterous bray and
is such a delight for all! Tammy and Dorian take
special care of Amahl making sure he's never without
his wither nibbles or companionship.
Amahl is almost 50 !! years old.
